What Is Anxiety?

We all have worries and fears every day of our lives, but for some people these worries and fears can start to control our lives to the point where we just cant function properly. Anxiety is a normal emotion we all experience, it is a reaction to some kind of stress in our lives. We all need to assess things in life to see how much danger is involved or we would just jump straight in and often get hurt. So we assess these situations but sometimes we worry about them too much, leading to generalized anxiety. The following list shows many common anxiety symptoms, look at the list and see how many of the symptoms you can relate to.

Everyday Symptoms Of Anxiety

- Are you always worried or on edge constantly
- Do you suffer from intrusive thoughts that wont go away
- Do you find it hard to relax
- Are you very nervous or jumpy
- Do you think something bad will happen if you dont do certain things
- Are you easily panicked by thoughts that you have forgot or lost something

If you can identify with a number of these symptoms then you may have an anxiety disorder. If you do recognise many of these symptoms you are not alone. Anxiety disorder is the most common form of mental disturbance in the UK, and it can be responsible for many other conditions like - OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), this often involves the person in unescapable routines like constantly checking doors are locked or windows are shut, or obsessive cleaning. Social anxiety is also very common and in some cases can lead to a more serious case of agorophobia where just the tought of going outside may terrify a sufferer so much that they can become housebound for years on end. Anxiety is often linked with varying degrees of depression. All in all these kinds of feelings can often also lead to what we call panic or anxiety attacks. These are a combination of both psychological and physiological symptoms which can make a person feel like they are losing control of their bodies, even to the point they may feel like they are going to have or are having a heart attack.

Panic or Anxiety Attacks

This can often lead to a vicious circle where upon we worry about a problem, so we feel more anxious which makes us worry even more. A panic attack occurs as a result of a continuation of this problem. We all still have an inbuilt fight or flight system within us, this helped us thousands of years ago so we could run away from an animal attack, or so we could chase prey. Of course we still can use this to get us away from danger, but nowadays we are more likely to be experiencing similar symptoms as a result of worrying about bills or even being stuck in a traffic jam. Our bodies produce exactly the same chemicals when we are stuck in a traffic jam as they do in a situation where real danger might occur. So our bodies prepare us for danger by increasing heart rate (so blood can pump faster and heal cuts quicker) also increasing breathing rate (to provide more oxygen to run faster) and providing us with chemicals such as adrenalin. This is a key chemical which helps to boost heart rate, also suppressing digestion.

It is important for a sufferer to realise the input that our minds have in this situation. Due to the increase in breathing rate, carbon dioxide levels can drop, this not an 'anxiety attack' makes a person feel dizzy. The chemicals involved can also give us tingling feelings, and the increase in heart rate can make a person feel like they are having a heart attack - all these feelings can lead sufferers to have lost control over their bodies when in fact, what is happening is our bodies reacting to a stimulus which we have been worrying about. It is just our perceptions that need to be changed, so we can realise just what IS happening and what IS NOT happening, then we learn to change our perceptions which can help us to not be so worried.

Anxiety Causes

It is most likely to be a combination of both nature (some of us are born with a predisposition to it) and nurture - we learn such behaviours from our parents or peer's. Of course the environment can play a large part in the anxiety level (work stress). Certain drugs and medications can also increase anxiety levels.anxiety_panic_paper

Anxiety Treatments

Your doctor may prescribe different types of anxiety medications like benzodiazepines or (SSRI's) like seroxat. The only trouble is that if you are prescribed these drugs is that they all have side effects, which for some people can make things worse and also they should only be seen as a temporary solution! When you stop taking them more often than not the anxiety problem will still be there, and you may also suffer withdrawal symptoms from the medication.

Behavioural therapies are often prescribed with or without drugs, but again these do not always work, and it can literally take years to get an appointment. At Ripley Hypnotherapy Garry is also trained in CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) but uses it in conjunction with hypnosis, psychotherapy and other forms of therapy so that he can help you get over your problem much quicker that these other methods.

How Can Hypnotherapy Help ?

Clinical Hypnotherapy can help you with your anxiety problem because it is a safe and natural therapy, there are no drugs and therefore no side effects like you may get from prescriptions from your GP. For some people, medications like your GP may prescribe may be ok, for many others though it is like putting a plaster over an open wound. Until you actually treat the anxiety, the problem will still be there once you stop taking the pills. I have helped many people deal with their anxieties by helping them to install new choices into their old behaviours and learning new ways to cope better, so that in time you may be free from the anxiety that has bothered you for so long.

You may not even be consciously aware of what is causing you to worry, and hypnosis can help you access those memories in your mind and give you insight into the root of your problems. No other therapy can do this as effectively as hypnotherapy, it is the perfect choice for problems of the mind whether you are aware what the problem is or not.
