About Me

Hypnosis (and therefore hypnotherapy) has been Garrys passion for many years- he qualified as a professional hypnotherapist in 2001, Hypnotherapist derbybuilding a well deserved reputation along the way, with referrals making up a large percentage of his work. In this time he has learned a vast array of techniques, in hypnotherapy (and other therapies) and he has gained an enormous knowledge of the sub-conscious mind and its workings. He has a friendly, non judgemental approach and is only too happy to give advice on any problem. No matter how bad it may seem to you, hypnotherapy can be used to beat it. As a professional therapist he is qualified and insured,  also a member of the leading hypnotherapy organisations which will soon become part of the government’s regulation of the industry. He also has a strong interest in neuro science, after all it is the brain where many of our problems originate!

Garry is a qualified, insured and registered hypnotherapist and hypno- psychotherapist. This may sound the same, but to be a qualified Hypno-Psychotherapist, takes 1800 hours at masters degree level. To be just a hypnotherapist takes 450 hours training at a much more basic level. Being bound by a strict code of ethics and operate within set procedures outlined by fellow training organisations and governing bodies. Ripley Hypnotherapy Derby offer a safe, comfortable environment, to help you achieve the goals you have. I hope to be able to show you empathy and treat you in a strictly confidential manner, no matter how bad you think your problem is. I also have a great deal of life experience which notraining course can teach you. I qualified in 2001 after training with the prestigious National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy (NCHP). The college is probably the longest established Hypno-Psychotherapy training school in the UK, if not the world. The training the college provides is second to none, and subsequent qualifications from the college can lead to membership of both UK and European organisations, which in turn can be one of the few ways to gain licence to be able to accept NHS referrals. I undertook comprehensive training in all the main models of psychotherapy and counselling. The college provides accredited training in smoking cessation, weight management, stress control procedures, IBS and other bowel/gut problems.

I have also undertaken training in NLP (neuro-linguistic programming). This is a relatively new technique which can dramatically reduce the time needed for a given presenting problem. The technique was brought to print in the 70′s and is one of the leading new forces in psychology. I am ethically bound, to an ongoing commitment to improving peoples lives, this includes CPD (continued professional development), which means that I agree to actively pursue further qualifications in many different forms to be able to provide the best service possible. Part of this commitment means I also have to be fully insured, and bound by a strict code of ethics. Any member of the college also has to undergo regular supervision.

You can rest assured that I only belong to a reputable professional association – the CNCH who maintain a strict code of ethics, and a complaints procedure for any problems that may arise. It is right for you to expect that I am fully insured, and most importantly, fully qualified to treat the problems I claim to be able to. At present anyone can pay a few hundred pounds for a ‘certificate’ and put a sign outside their house, and call themselves a Hypnotherapist. Like many members of the public, we would like to see a change in the law to stop this, and provide statutory regulation for all complementary therapies. We believe that there should be a system in place so that the public can be confident that the person they turn to for help, is, not only capable, but also accountable- just like a doctor or a dentist to name a few. At this very moment, changes are being implemented which will soon pave the way for statutory regulation across a wide range of complementary therapies of which, hypno-psychotherapy will be one of the main ones. Any decent therapist, well trained, fully insured and offering a valid service to the general public should have nothing to fear from this change.

About Hypnosis

People often ask – what is hypnosis? Well, hypnosis is nothing new, until anaesthesia came along, you would have been one of the lucky few, to have an operation with the chance to be hypnotised. We’ve all experienced it, whether we realise it as a ‘trance state’ or not. A good example is when you are driving along and then think to yourself.. “where am I going?…Im going the wrong way”. You might explain this by saying..”I was miles away” or ” Im not concentrating”. The point here is: you got where you were, somehow, even if you dont remember actually driving there, your mind was definitely somewhere else, but you are still able to perform what you wanted to- in this example, its drive the car. Standing in a long queue can also let our minds wander, this is the same as a trance state.

To me, there is no argument about whethere hypnosis exists or not – you cannot pinpoint a persons mind, but we all know it is there ‘our mind’ is just a name we give to it, it is the same with a trance state. It is thought we experience a (quick) trance state approximately every 90 minutes or so lasting only a minute or perhaps less. So you should have nothing to fear from it, in fact if you try it and embrace it you might just realise you can do things you never thought possible. What can hypnosis be used for explains just some of the things it is really effective against.

Hypnotherapy IS : safe, relaxing, effective

Hypnotherapy IS NOT : dangerous, nor mind control

- You cannot get stuck in hypnosis
- There is no mind control
- You are always safe, aware and in control
- Nothing bad will occur whilst in a trance state

How It Works

One of the pioneers of modern hypnosis- Milton Erickson said that we all have inner powers/abilities/strengths that we do not make the best use of. Clients when faced with a problem are not so much unresourceful as in an unresourceful state. That is to say that we often do not realise our capabilities, and it is only by using the trance state that we can learn new things- new ways to behave even if we have exhibited these old unwanted behaviours for many years. As stated before a trance state is akin to meditation, a deep focus or a different way of using our minds to achieve something. A runner goes into ‘the zone’ when in a race, yet immediately they cross the finishing line, they can collapse through exhaustion.

You can learn to use this power to your advantage, whatever your goals are a trance state can help you get where you want to go. A trance state is a natural thing not something to be scared of. A while ago there was much input from the scientific community to say that hypnosis was all put on and ie being faked by people. Lately however science has shown that certain parts of the brain are activated during hypnosis, and these parts of the brain were not active in the control group of the experiment who were just following along. There have also been countless operations carried out using only hypnosis as anaesthetic, it is quite literally switching the pain off!! If you can cut people open in surgery and control the pain using hypnosis- imagine its potential power for other things.
